And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of
Olives. (Matthew 26:30)
Because it is a Sunday morning at the time of writing, and that means that church-time is waiting some hours from now, there was a moment of feeling I needed to do some studying in preparation to share the word with our home church. Thankfully, my tears demanded I stop and let myself feel the wonder of what it was like to hear Jesus singing then, and what it will be like to hear him in eternity.
Part of my
wondering arose from the consideration of what Jesus could sing as the perfect
Son of God who never sinned. We are so used to singing songs of salvation for
ourselves, but Jesus did not need this. He did not need to sing songs of
repentance for sins, or songs of atonement for his broken relationship with
God. He would not need to sing songs of longing to know God, for he was in
fellowship with God his whole human life.
A second thing that
wove into this was wondering what songs the disciples had memorized because they
were sung at every Passover? What songs would express the glory of the Passover
as a prelude to “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John
1:29)? What songs could Jesus enter with all his heart, soul, mind, and voice
that were already firmly embedded in the hearts of his disciples but expressed
his relationship to God his Father as both Son of God and Son of Man?
Finally, I looked at some Psalms that were connected with the history of what the Jews may have sung at Passover. While I cannot say for certain what parts of these Jesus and the disciples sang that night, I could see expressions Jesus could sing to his Father as freely as he would encourage his disciples to do so.
I will leave you with a few samples to express to our God in worship, while wondering what it would have sounded like to hear Jesus singing such words as these.
Praise the LORD
(Yahweh), all nations!
Extol him, all
peoples!
For great is his
steadfast love toward us,
and the faithfulness
of the LORD (Yahweh) endures forever.
Praise the LORD
(Yahweh)!
(Psalm 117)
Oh give thanks to the
LORD (Yahweh), for he is good;
for his steadfast
love endures forever!
(Psalm 118:1 & 29)
