I think that people
sometimes get mixed up about whether they are reading the word “pursue” or the
word “peruse”. Pursue means to follow in order to overtake or capture, while peruse
means to read or study, either carefully or casually.
If we think the Bible tells
us to peruse the things of God, all we need to do is read about them with
whatever level of interest we desire. Thinking about what God is telling us is
all that is required.
On the other hand, if we
think the Bible tells us to pursue the things of God, we will need to get up
from our reading, and set out to take hold of those realities of life until we
know that they have become part of us. There is no satisfaction until we have
received what we asked for, found what we were seeking, and entered through the
door where we were knocking.[1]
Consider what the following
two verses mean when we understand that we are called to pursue what is
described. Then think about how much we would lose if we only peruse such
things.
“So
then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding”.[2]
“So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace,
along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart”.[3]
Pursue and peruse. Too big
a difference to just think about.
