When the Bible speaks about meditating on
the word of God, it is the real version all the counterfeits seek to imitate,
disparage, and replace.
Meditation means to give prolonged,
deliberate, concentrated, thought to the things God reveals in his word. It is
not the mind-numbing, thought-escaping, meaninglessness of sitting in a
particular position and going into a trance where Satan and his emissaries can
fill our minds with whatever thoughts they desire. The "mmmmmmm's",
and mantras of the counterfeiters are not only foreign to biblical meditation,
but enemies of our God.
When God encourages us with such
declarations is, “Blessed is the man who
walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor
sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on
his law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:1-2), we are not to picture
someone in a zen/yoga dissociative state.
Rather, we are to picture someone who cannot
stop thinking about the wonderful revelations of God’s word. This person cannot
stop wondering about what he has heard, and considering the meaning of the
truth he has learned. During the day, his thoughts continually return to the
latest considerations of the glory of God and his work in his people. At night,
he cannot lie down without his mind becoming abuzz with thoughts about God,
reminders of things the word of God has revealed to his soul.
In other words, while the counterfeit
versions of meditation do not require any thought at all, the real-thing is all
about giving lots and lots of thought to the truths God has already revealed
about himself. The more thoughts, the merrier the meditation, so to speak.
