Revelation 4 begins with the words, “After this…” We cannot
travel into the rest of the book of Revelation without taking with us what John
has already written. Today this drew me back to the first chapter where we are
given John’s vision of Jesus that caused him to “fall at his feet as though
dead,” and we are given the words of Jesus that told John to “fear not”.
A beautiful commentary on how we can know Jesus as one who is
of such glory that we would be overcome with fear, and yet the one who stills
every fear into “not”, is what John Newton wrote in the song, “Amazing Grace”. He
wrote: “T'was Grace that taught my heart to fear; and Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear the hour I first believed.”
Grace enables us to see the fearsome glory of the Son of Man,
and, at the same time, hear his words as a Shepherd to his sheep, assuring us
that we have nothing to fear. His rod and his staff will comfort us all the way
through the green pastures and the still waters of the book of Revelation.
