When life hurts, many men are conditioned to do their best to
“take it like a man”. This means, doing our best to buck-up under our pain and
shame and keep going. This leads to denial, suppression, pretending everything
is okay when it is not, because that’s what men do.
As I think about how different the church is from the world,
I believe it would be better for men to “take it like a child”. When children
get hurt, they run to their parents/caregivers for comfort. They make no
pretense of being strong enough to handle pain (or sin). They are designed to
have someone else return them to joy by holding them, speaking softly to them,
letting them cry it out, listening to their complaints.
God’s men must be like children (Jesus said so), and that
includes taking life like a child who keeps running to Jesus for all the
comfort, help and healing he holds out to us.
Men, we are designed to have Jesus return us to joy. Go have
a good cry on his shoulder and see what healing he has for your broken heart.
