Today this verse stood out to me: "Forty years you
sustained them in the wilderness, and they lacked nothing." (Nehemiah
9:21)
This is remarkable. God sustained his people while they were
in the wilderness. They were in the wilderness under discipline because they
would not trust God to sustain them in the land he promised to them. So, he
gave them the wilderness they believed was preferable to trusting God, and,
while they ended their lives there, he sustained them the whole time. They were
under discipline from God, and he sustained them!
That suddenly reminds me of
this verse: "Or do you presume on
the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's
kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?" (Romans 2:4)
When God is kindly sustaining us, it does not necessarily
mean he approves of what we are doing. He sometimes sustains us while
disciplining us, even while showing us kindness that is to lead us to
repentance for our rebellion and unbelief.
Today God glorifies himself in
my sight by showing me this wonderful picture that he sustains his people even
when they are under his discipline. Methinks I have experienced this far more
often than I have ever realized. I am thankful to have this God as my Father!
