Bible Study (Online): Gospel of Mark ~ Study Twenty-four

Getting to Know Jesus in the Gospel of Mark
Study Twenty-Four: Mark 4:35-41

35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” (Mark 4)

1.  Whose idea was it to make this trip? What does that tell you about the situation the disciples encountered?

2. How would this account help someone who feels they are going through something where it feels like Jesus is “asleep”.

3. What judgment did the disciples make on Jesus when they found him sleeping? What are similar judgments people make on Jesus when they don’t like the way he is handling something they are going through?

4. How did Jesus use this situation to teach his disciples something about themselves?

5. How did Jesus use this situation to reveal himself in a way the disciples did not already know him?

6. Since the issue here was not Jesus’ care, or his ability to help, but the little faith of the disciples, how do you think God is applying this lesson to your life?

7. How do you see God working to reveal himself to you in ways you do not already know him?
