If you have followed the last two messages on spiritual
gifts, you know that I believe what the apostles taught about these things
apply to the church until the return of Christ. After that, of course,
spiritual gifts will not be required for us to live in perfect fellowship with
God and each other. In the meantime, they are just as necessary now as they
were in the first century.
In this next message, we look at more things the apostles
taught that show very explicitly that they intended all their teachings to
continue on through every generation of the church. This is not only about
spiritual gifts, but neither do they ever exclude spiritual gifts from what
they taught on these matters.
Join our home church for a journey through Scriptures that
give us, in God’s own words, a very clear picture of his will. As Jesus said,
the wise will hear his words, as breathed-out through the apostles, and will
put them into practice.
I hope you will also see that we are not afraid of swinging
so far away from the Cessationist denial of the spiritual gifts that we become
like the Charismaniacs who are just plain weird about this stuff. Instead, our
focus will remain on seeking the whole counsel of God on this matter, and
experiencing it as the Spirit pleases.
The bottom line is that we must never be afraid to earnestly
desire what God explicitly tells us to earnestly desire, or to pursue what he
tells us to pursue. When we pursue him, and seek to set our minds on his Spirit
as he himself instructs, he will be sure to lead us into what he means by the
spiritual gifts he gives.
Note: In my exuberance over sharing these things in my message, I may
sometimes use the wrong term in referring to which is pendulum and which is
plumbline, but the diagrams I use express what I’m really trying to say! I’m
not deliberately trying to keep folks on their toes, but simply acknowledge
that such faux pas take place, and my apologies for any misunderstandings they
may cause! If you find such an endearing mistake on my part, just replay that section
and clarify that I mean what is on the diagram. In our home church setting, I
was likely alerted to this for clarification purposes, but edited out that part
to maintain a smoother flow to the video. Thankfully, this is one more thing our heavenly Father can work for good.
